Exeter has a compact nightlife scene shaped by the University of Exeter, with a mix of student clubs, live music venues, and a smaller underground electronic community. The Phoenix is an arts centre programming live music, film, and club events across multiple genres.

Exeter's nightlife is most active during university term time, with the busiest nights midweek and at weekends. The Quay has a distinct character as a slightly alternative area with its own bar and venue scene. Being a gateway to Devon and Cornwall, Exeter catches touring acts that might otherwise skip the South West.
