Nightlife in Edinburgh

Edinburgh has an active nightlife scene that runs year-round, not just during the Fringe. The city offers club nights, DJ sets, live gigs, and events across genres including techno, house, drum and bass, electro, indie, folk, and hip-hop. Edinburgh nightlife is concentrated in the Cowgate and Old Town areas, with additional venues along George Street and in the student areas of the South Side.

The Cowgate is Edinburgh's main clubbing street, running through a valley below the Royal Mile with venues built into the vaulted arches and basements of centuries-old buildings. Sneaky Pete's, Cabaret Voltaire, and the Bongo Club are among the most respected electronic music venues in Scotland. Several Edinburgh clubs hold 5am licences, making the city one of the later-closing nightlife destinations in the UK.

Edinburgh has a large student population keeping midweek events active. The Fringe in August transforms the entire city into an events destination with pop-up venues and parties in every available space. Hogmanay on New Year's Eve is one of the largest celebrations in the world.
