A Sonica triple bill at Glad Cafe

Raivo Sloan
Genres collide in the work of Glasgow-based Latvian musician, producer and DJ Raivo Sloan. Atonal ambient sounds merge and blur with sounds from the stranger outer edges of R&B, as elements emerge from each piece to generate the next song in the set. Vocals smear across echoing spaces; beats cluster up close then scatter across the stars; songs emerge through gauzy electronica as though sung from another dimension. The results are eerie and emotive, yet playful, with the wittiness of the musical experimenter who explores what happens when seemingly incompatible musical styles come together.

The Dark Mirror - Moira Salt, Tommy Perman & Andrew Wasylyk
Take a ride through the waterways of Britain in Moira Salt’s evocative film, constructed entirely from archive footage. Drawing on two distinct yet related locales, Bo’ness and Birmingham, The Dark Mirror introduces three fictitious figures linked to the historical, political and social histories of canals, and tells a story of those who built, worked on and were displaced by them. The silent film is set to an ambient soundtrack rippling with warm folktronica, performed live on the night by composers Tommy Perman and Andrew Wasylyk. This is a journey through water and time to unlock a hidden history.

sonic_{imprints}° - Jett Ilagan
As we move through the world, how do we familiarise ourselves with new environments? Drawing from Jett Ilagan’s own experience of a nomadic lifestyle, and from his research into the lives of Filipino workers travelling overseas in search of employment, sonic_{imprints}° highlights the importance of sound to our experience of place. A jittery electronic soundtrack shot through with snatches of city noise accompanies the visitor as they explore this immersive hybrid of performance and light installation, tuning into others’ experiences and reflecting on their own navigation of urban space.
