For the final edition of this autumn series, SSS welcomes artist, DJ and broadcaster Ashley Holmes, who will presenting the next in his series of Dub Epistemologies.
Dub Epistemology is a series of hybrid talks and live audio essays, using sound and listening as ways of engaging critically with the social, cultural and spiritual traditions of Black music. The series explores dub as both a conceptual framework and a studio method, rooted in movement, repetition and time, where ideas and histories are cited, echoed and reworked.
This edition focusses on Bass Culture, the third studio album by dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson released in 1980. Alongside his earlier records, this album is part of a collection of LKJ’s works that are an importing document of Black British history, charting the political and racial tensions of the 1970s and 1980s.
In his audio essay followed by a DJ set, Ashley will bring a selection of reggae, dub poetry and archival materials to The System that expand on the themes of Bass Culture and asks how history, experience and memory are carried, shared and transmitted through music and collective listening.
Ashley Holmes is an artist, DJ and broadcaster whose work spans sound, performance, printmaking, drawing and publishing. Since 2017 he has been a resident on NTS Radio, where his monthly show Tough Matter brings together experimental music, sound and conversation.
