Off symmetry and Earthly Pleasures channel their collective energies to welcome Cosmo Vitelli to The Other People Place, Renae’s new club space, for a cosmic bank holiday Sunday special.
Cosmo has been a key figure within the underground dance scene for almost three decades, developing his signature approach to dance music and earning his reputation as an accomplished DJ and label manager as well as an esteemed producer, with countless records, remixes and edits to his name. As a DJ, there is a freedom and an edge to the way that Cosmo fuses diverse genres into playful, hypnotic and energetic sets full of obscure bangers. It’s difficult to describe his style in terms of genre because there are so many; his selections are leftfield, there’s some sleazy house, acid, techno, wave, sometimes an off-kilter Italo feel, with krautrock and psychedelic elements threaded through. What characterises the magic is in the excitement of unexpected juxtaposition and the beauty with which Cosmo whips all this up into a party … cosmic synths alongside growling guitars and heavyweight rhythms – music to get lost in and then suddenly find yourself again, woken up by a perfect curveball.
This spirit translates also into his prolific work as a producer and on his label, I’m a Cliché, which he began in 2004. His label stands out for its uncompromising approach, simultaneously playing tribute to established artists while also taking risks by exploring music from the margins; Cosmo has a knack for finding talented artists before they break through (Azari & III, Moscoman and Red Axes). His I’m a Cliché edit series is consistently impressive in its smudging reworks of classics and forgotten gems. This series gives an idea of his musical world, featuring all the big guns of underground dance (Ivan Smagghe, Manfredas, JD Twitch, Front de Cadeaux, Fantastic Twins, Sacha Mambo, to name just a few). The contributing artists in this series follow a Cosmo kind of approach, fusing dance music with genres that were not traditionally played in the club, transforming psychedelic rock and wave classics into weird dancefloor bangers.
In his own productions, Vitelli transmits his love of guitars and pop into Bot’Ox, Vitelli’s side project with Julien Briffaz of Tekel, with releases on DFA and DC Recordings. His album with Truus de Groot in 2024 on I’m a Cliché is a big favourite of ours. He has also released music on on Virgin, Kitsune music, Les Disques De La Mort and Malka Tuti. Vitelli’s uncompromising ear and DIY philosophy is also cuptured in the NTS show he co-curates with DJ Sundae, No Weapon is Absolute, which explores crossings between left-field electronic and guitar-based music.
