Dead Signal asks what emancipation might look like when the tools of surveillance become tools of resistance. Across a week in the space, Coaxial Point bring two separate practices, one audio and one video, into a single environment for the first time.
At the centre of the work is 4-track cassette recording and the question of whether the lo-fi flatness of magnetic tape survives spatial translation, or whether it has to be rethought entirely for a multichannel field. Against this sit CRT and CCTV monitors, analogue mixers, and a live feed of the room, with sound and image feeding back into one another. The 8.2 system is central to the enquiry, since surveillance and fear are positional. The pair will also develop a generative link between live CCTV movement-tracking and reactive sound, so that the presence of a body in the room becomes part of what the work does.

Coaxial Point, Tim Zercie and Stewart Hardie, is a two-person artist collective working with obsolete recording technologies, analogue video, and the politics of the surveilled body. Their practice centres on 4-track cassette recording: layered field recordings, degraded speech, the hiss and dropout of magnetic decay. Magnetic tape once served both state surveillance and countercultural refusal; Coaxial Point works within that doubling, treating the medium as both instrument of control and tool of resistance.
Alongside the audio work, they build video environments from CCTV cameras, CRT monitors, and VHS footage drawn from 1980s–90s conspiracy and UFO archives, grainy obsessive material made outside official image culture, in which citizens turned surveillance technology back toward the sky and the unexplained. Mixed live through analogue video mixers, these images accumulate feedback, luma keying, and tape artefacts; the image is never clean, always failing.
