About this event

** 100 seats + the rest standing - first come first served / tickets on Headfirst **

Born in Kaifeng, China, YU SU is a musician, DJ, composer and occasional chef whose music occupies a distinctive space between dub techno, ambient and experimental club forms. Out earlier this year on tipped Sheffield label Short Span, her second album, Foundry, is a suite of expansive, nonlinear explorations of rhythm, texture and space, built around a concept of “in between music” that evokes transformation, memory and movement. Taking influence from sources like Chris Marker’s essay film Sans Soleil, the work of Victorian painter Frederic Leighton, and her own recent relocation to London, Foundry’s meticulously constructed tracks include collaborations with Seefeel, Miyako Koda of cult Japanese art pop duo Dip In The Pool, and Memotone. For this show Yu Su will revamp the album into a live AV performance.

JJJJJEROME ELLIS is a Grenadian-Jamaican-American composer, poet, performer and person who stutters. Their interdisciplinary works are invitations to healing, communion and deep listening. Combining spoken word with ambient and jazz textures, often using saxophone, flute, dulcimer, electronics, and voice, they examine the interrelations between Blackness, dysfluency, speech, silence and transcendence. Releases include 2021’s much lauded album and poetry book The Clearing (NNA Tapes / The Poetry Project) and last year’s Vesper Sparrow (Shelter Press). They’re also an acclaimed poet, writer, photographer, video artist and former Yale lecturer, who has presented work at Tate Modern, Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial. We’re very excited to host their debut Bristol appearance.

MEMOTONE is one artistic alias of Will Yates, a wonderful composer and musician whose work fuses jazz, folk, contemporary classical, ambient and esoteric fourth-world music. Following on from releases on labels like World of Echo and The Trilogy Tapes, band shows with DIALS and Jabu, and guest appearances on recent Carrier and Yu Su releases, his latest album Warm Shadows (Accidental Meetings) is one of his most compelling sets to date.
