Dubstep started in South London around 2001 with deep, dark sub-bass and sparse half-time rhythms at 140 BPM. The original sound — Mala, Digital Mystikz, Skream — is a world away from the "brostep" that went mainstream. The 140 scene has seen a major resurgence, with nights focusing on the deeper, more meditative end.
