FB.WIP + renae presents an evening centred around heritage, memory and musical story telling. Taking place in renae's intimate T.O.P.P (The Other People Place), this session explores the sounds and histories that have shaped contemporary Black music through the lens of Highlife and other West African musical traditions.
Dare Balogun
A British-Nigerian DJ, writer, broadcaster and archivist whose work explores the lineage of traditional African dance music and its relationship to modern Black musical forms. Through his acclaimed Roots to Rhythm project and NTS Radio residency, Dare has become one of the foremost voices presenting Highlife, Juju, Soukous, Makossa and Palm Wine music within contemporary listening and club culture. His research-led, vinyl-only selections have been shared everywhere from the Barbican and Southbank Centre to Public Records in New York and SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin.
Oriki
Named after the Yoruba tradition of praise poetry, her practice draws on both her Nigerian heritage and Manchester upbringing. Blending African-inspired rhythms with deep house, bass and dub influences, Oriki’s sets are rooted in storytelling, creating spaces where culture, and rhythm meet on the dancefloor.
