On July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, an event took place that was supposed to bring disco’s reign to an end. Dubbed “Disco Demolition Night”, thousands gathered to watch disco records piled onto the centre of a baseball field and blown to pieces in a spectacular act of defiance. It would go down in history as the night disco died.
But disco had other plans.
What its critics failed to understand was that disco had already escaped the confines of American dancefloors. It had become a global movement. From the glittering clubs of Europe to the vibrant local scenes of India, the former Yugoslavia, Nigeria, and beyond, disco spread like wildfire, transcending borders, languages, and cultures. It united people under mirrorballs across the world, inspiring countless local scenes and leaving a legacy that continues to shape dance music to this day.
So, on the anniversary of that infamous night, Stereo Master celebrates the music that refused to die.
Join us for an all-night journey through the many corners of the disco universe, featuring a handpicked selection of underground gems, forgotten classics, cosmic oddities, and dancefloor anthems from around the globe. Because nearly 50 years later, the message is clear:
