In 1985, Trinidad & Tobago was the first independent country in the world to recognise and establish a national day to celebrate Emancipation Day on August 1st. On this auspicious day, African liberation, heritage and resilience was celebrated as people paraded across Port of Spain dressed proudly in their traditional wear as they danced, drummed, sang and chanted through the city streets.
In 2026, more than 30 years into the future, Jus Now is ready for this celebration that started in Trinidad and Tobago and made its way throughout the West Indies, to travel all the way to Jumbi in Pekham, which is renowned for its reverence of Caribbean Music, Food & Culture. Jumbi's presence as a leader of Caribbean-led programming aligns with Jus Now's ethos in ushering the sound of the Caribbean into the contemporary UK music & entertainment industry.
Jus Now presents CouSouMay, an Emancipation Day celebration and party that honours African and Afro-Caribbean heritage, freedom and cultural pride through music, art and food. CouSouMay is curating an event space that tells a deeper story that engages not just our senses, but our sense of selves.
As former British colonies, to celebrate the emancipation of our ancestors in the land of our former colonisers, is to symbolize the historic and continuous movement of the West Indian people and our contributions to the foundation of this land through our people’s labour, our culture and our spirits.
Featuring a sonic journey of Afro-Caribbean DJ sets, live performances, arts and cultural exhibitions & Jumbi’s Caribbean inspired cuisine, Jus Now invites you to come CouSouMay with us and commemorate this historic day of liberation.
