Phon-etics x DisOriental: Coco Dos Pretos (Live 8 piece band from Recife Brazil)

Hailing from Recife, Brazil, Coco dos Pretos bring the Brazilian sunshine and rhythms to Sheffield as part of their very first tour of the UK. Since 2006, the group has pioneered an innovative approach to the traditional coco rhythm, expanding and refining its sound while staying rooted in ancestral heritage.

Based in the Chão de Estrelas community, the group not only holds rehearsals but also leads a meaningful socio-cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-descendant culture. Through their work, they challenge the stigmas often attached to popular traditions such as coco, and above all, they celebrate and strengthen Afro-Brazilian identity and expression.
